Site cracked

So, when I logged on my computer this afternoon, Windows Live Messenger popped up with a notice about this email waiting for me in my inbox:

For those of you who don’t read Norwegian, it basically says that my web host was hit by a cracker attack last night, and that if you were one of the unlucky ones to have your account affected, all your files starting with “index” or “main” would’ve been overwritten by the cracker. I immediately opened up Firefox to see if my account was hit, and, sure bet, it was:

Well, there went those next three hours, spent hunting down copies of the overwritten files. Thankfully I got it all restored in its entirety.

However, it really got me thinking about the larger issue here; people wasting their talent on doing damage like this, just for the — I guess — recognition. Or, is there really any talent involved? Finding exploits like these doesn’t take much effort these days. In any case, I pity the person who did this. Stuff like this is about as low as it can get.

Update August 10th: From Saturday night until Monday after this attack, the web server was down after an OS upgrade gone wrong. Some time after the server got back up, it got cracked again:

Getting the site back up didn’t take that long this time around though, but it was still certainly very annoying.

Good that you finally got the site fixed.

Script kiddies so utterly suck. :-(

At least it’s up and running again, you should be glad he didn’t do anything more serious/didn’t have the skills to ;P. Your webhost seems pretty incompetent, if he had struck the SQL databases, you would have had a lot more work to do, or none at all depending one whether you would have bothered restoring it. :D

Keep up the interesting ramblings. :]

Hacking is rather stupid is it not.

reminds me of the BMS hacking…the work of a script kiddie.
